So I went to the Birmingham concert on August 8th. This was my SECOND Idol concert this summer. The first time, I traveled to Hartford, CT with second row seats, but sadly Kat was not there. But this time she WAS there, and I actually got to meet her after the concert. Good times, good times indeed. Let me preface my story by saying that I went to the show with my sister (an Elliott fan) and two of her work friends (both Taylor fans.) Also, sorry I'm posting this so late but work and other obligations this week delayed me from posting. So here's my Kat story for all who are interested: So we get to our hotel in B'ham around 3:00 Tuesday afternoon, and as soon as we walked into the lobby, we immediately could tell we were in Taylor country. The lobby was FULL of women with Soul Patrol or Taylor shirts on. It was quite nauseating. I kid, I kid. Anyway, we settled in our room and got ready for the concert, and at about 6:30 we started our short walk to the arena.
Our seats were crappy. Lower level, but quite far from the stage. The show began, and of course, I had seen all of the other ones before, so I just kind of sat there and watched while the Idols preceding Kat came and went from the stage. All I wanted at this point was for Kat to come out so I could see her live and in person. After Chris, Elliott, Ace and Bucky's rendition of "Patience", the lights dim, and the next thing I hear is a female voice saying "2, 3, 4!" The lights come back on again, and there's Kat sitting on the top of the stage for BHaCT. The big screens gradually display her image and I'm freaking out. And for me, freaking out is not jumping around and screaming and being all crazy.... I literally just sat there in shock and I got teary-eyed. I was FINALLY seeing this girl in person, and she looked so stunning and sounded SO good... it was a dream come true (as cheesy as that sounds.) I have to say though, the B'ham crowd kinda ticked me off, because Kat's reception was, to me, rather lukewarm. It got better though, because after Over the Rainbow, it was like the crowd realized how freaking awesome her voice is.... (she sounded amazing and absolutely killed at the end) and it was great seeing people gradually rise to their feet and give her a standing ovation while she held out that last note. She received a stellar response at the end of OtR. It made my heart warm for her.
Anyway, seeing her in concert isn't even the good part of this story. After the show, the four of us all just sat in our seats for awhile waiting for the crowd to recede. But I had to use the restroom. So I left for a sec while my sister and her two friends tried to come up with a way to get backstage. (My sister tries it every year at the Idol concerts and it NEVER works.) On my way to the restroom, I passed a table where Idol memorobilia was being sold, and for some reason, I decided to stand in line and buy a Kat shirt. I hadn't planned on it, but there was something inside telling me to do it. So I did. And boy, am I glad I did.
At some point I reconnected with my sister and her friends (after they attempted and failed to sneak backstage for the Idol Meet n' Greet.... but that's another story) and we immediately made our way towards the Idol buses. The buses were parked right outside the arena in an empty front parking lot. The parking lot was rectangular shaped and barricaded all the way around, and there were tons of people already lined up for a chance to meet the Idols. One of the barricades was located right beside this tunnel that led underneath the arena, and this i
s where the Idols, one by one, were slowly emerging to make their way to the buses. Anyway, this barricade was probably 30 yards long and had a crowd of fans already seven rows deep lined up against it, so I knew my chances of meeting or even getting close to Kat were slim to none. So I decided to just stand on the outskirts of the fans and hope that maybe I'd be able to raise my camera over the crowd and get a picture of her if she decided to sign autographs or whatever.
