sjwolves from katharinefans.com recap

(DISCLAIMER:  If by chance you happen to be reading this Katharine...just know we do these things because we love you so much, OK?  And...we weren't following you...it just kinda happened out of the blue.) (I'll explain in the story).

Alright, some of you may have heard the play-by-play of some of these things last night in the late hours in the chat room I think but he's my detailed account of the non-concert portion of my San Jose adventures...(I'll do a mini-review of the concert itself when I'm done with this.  I gave you most of my concert thoughts in the Sacramento review but I do have a couple things to add after seeing a second show...)

OK...onto the stories...should I start with the good stuff first or just go chronologically?  Hmm, we'll go in the order of how things happened...(so scroll down if you just want the Katharine encounter...I'm titling each part to help you navigate what I'm sure is going to turn into a mini-novel here...)

PRE-CONCERT

I meet up with Maddie in Stockton (I'm coming from Redding, which is 3 hours north of Stockton if you don't know California geography...).  I had met her the night before at Arco just to say "Hello" and go over a few things about our trip the next day...I wasn't expecting to feel like I'm 9 feet tall but this was only the beginning of that feeling as I was to find out.

Anyway, so we make the drive in to San Jose from Stockton...we listen to Maddie's comprehensive Katharine CD the whole way and we just talked about all the same kinds of things we talk about around here...

OK...so we arrive in San Jose around 4:30...we're hoping that maybe, possibly we might catch Katharine or at least one of the Idols wondering around the bus area...no luck, we're too late...the meet & greet starts at 4 p.m. and so...we were out of luck.  So we were left milling around the parking lot for a little while...we meet this guy with four little kids who apparently came from the meet & greet...we don't like this guy though as he said something about Katharine not being very friendly or whatever...his comment stuck with us for about 15 minutes until we met some more people!

We ran into two teenage girls & the mother of one of them...one of the girls was from Santa Rosa (she'd been to the Sacramento show the night before, too)...the other one & the mom was from Fremont.  I think, I'm sorry if I screwed up the towns...so we're talking and we find out that they know all the stories from here...the KAT IN GLASSES craze included...so we had to like them.  Plus, our Santa Rosa girl showed us pictures she took of Katharine when she met her (one in particular was beautiful...ha!  of course, it's a pic of Katharine!) and then she showed us her cell phone that Katharine had signed for her.  I'm amazed that Katharine could sign on a cell phone as legibly as she did...her signature was just like the other ones I've seen...I guess she has had a lot of practice lately...

So...she says Katharine's an absolute doll and she doesn't know what that guy was talking about.  That made Maddie & I feel much better...

In the meanwhile...Maddie's on her cell phone trying to make sure of meeting places with Colleen (cobabycmw) & Laura (luv4ll I can't remember it all...)...if I'm messing up any names I'm sorry (I don't think I am but...).

OK...so we start to head toward the front of HP Pavilion around 5:30...we wait out there for what seems like forever because we have these two guys preaching to us about how "idolizing" anyone but Jesus is a sin and we're all going to hell and all these kinds of things...these guys got some interesting comments from people going by...

So we meet Laura first (I don't know why I'm so uncertain if that's right...I'm pretty sure...just let me know, ok?  It's bothering me...) and she's with her h usband.  She's got a really adorable homemade Katharine shirt on which got some comments from others (good comments)...oh, I should mention here that Maddie has on her "Homecoming" orange as well...anyway...so we take a picture of the three of us...a picture that confirms that either I really am 9 feet tall or all the rest of you are really tiny people...not sure which.

So then while we're talking and we see a woman in an orange shirt (but it doesn't have anything on it to make it for sure that the orange is intentional for Katharine...) walk by us and smile...we take note and say, "Oh, she liked the shirts..."  Then a second later she comes back to us and says, "Hi guys, I'm Colleen".  OH OK!  That's why you looked at us that way!

More pictures get taken (which further confirm that I might really be 11 feet tall or so I felt...) and we head inside the arena...

It becomes clear to me after talking to Maddie & Colleen for a little while that we really all are borderline insane about Katharine.  I mean rationally none of these things we do make sense, but it is all just so enjoyable & fun that...you know?  Why not?

OK, so we are in the arena and Colleen says that we have to meet Minnie...alright...so we wait near the information desk at the front of the concourse...here comes Minnie...we take more pictures (I only feel about 8 feet tall now...thank you Minnie)...we say goodbye to everyone and we arrange with Colleen to meet after the show at the buses area...but it becomes clear that Colleen has a mission to get backstage (which we'll get to in a second or an hour ...)

We grab two concerts programs...get something to eat/drink and proceed to our seats just in time for Mandisa to come on...

DURING THE SHOW

Maddie shows me Vadia's text message from Los Angeles about reminding everyone what to tell people about the glowsticks and how after "Patience" they need to chant Katharine's name...pretty funny...
Then Maddie shows me another text message from Katharine06Idol in Florida...she wants us to leave the phone on while Katharine does her three songs...OK, no problem...and she makes it clear that she doesn't want to miss "2, 3, 4"...so....OK, got it.

Alright so we're enjoying the first half of the show making comments about how most of the Idols repeat themselves in their comments to the crowd (I think Katharine & Elliott were the only two to be somewhat original)...

We get to the intermission...I see this probably 6-year old girl holding up a sign that says "KATHARINE ROCKS!"...and I point it out to Maddie...and she's got to have a picture...so we're trying to catch the girl turning toward us but she wasn't cooperating...but Maddie already had a mission to go find our Santa Rosa girl (who was sitting in the section next to us) to make sure she signs up on here (if you are reading this...Hi!)

So the intermission takes what seems like forever but I notice that there are a lot more Katharine messages on the State Farm Text Message thing than there were in Sacramento...so that makes me happy.

Then Chris hits the stage...so we're starting to get close to Katharine time...then Elliott does his thing...he's done...here comes "Patience"....Maddie gets the phone out to get ready to call Katharine06Idol in Florida...so there's about 30 seconds left and I can here Maddie on the phone, "You ready?..." not realizing she's talking to me since I get to hold the phone out because Maddie's going to take pictures of Katharine...So I say,

"Do I need to do anything?"...
"No, just hold the phone up."
"OK..."

So here comes Katharine...I'm holding the phone out...I'm trying my best to keep my hand steady so nothing weird happens to the audio...apparently this works out pretty well...the only exception was during "Think" and that may have been my fault...I'm sorry, but when Katharine starts swiveling, shaking and shimming around that stage...it may have caused my finger to slip on the phone and muffle the audio...

So it seems like that was a success...the show continues on...Katharine comes out for "Living In America" in the same white number she had on in Sacramento...I've got more on this in my review...I gained a GREAT appreciation for this outfit in San Jose...much better angle to appreciate it...or appreciate the person wearing it actually...I hope there's video for all to see...more on that in the review (my brain went dead there for a second thinking about that skirt she had on...oooh!)

AFTER THE SHOW (WAITING AT THE BUSES)

We get to the arena where the buses are going to come out of and there were at least a few hundred people there.  I was surprised by that...at least from the pictures I'd seen in other places...I don't know.  Anyway...so we wait and wait...Maddie's got our Katharine06Idol on the phone again checking in on everything happening in the chat rooms and stuff...so I'm waiting for any action in the bus area...

About a half hour later we see a black town car come rumbling up the ramp that leads out of the arena...Hey look it's Chris sticking his head out the window waving at everyone.  That's pretty cool.  So we're thinking they must be staying in town for the night and will be heading for Portland on Thursday...

So we wait a while longer and here comes Colleen...she had made it backstage all the way to the main security guys and then got stopped...Security man Fred (not the legendary Dolph) kept her away...she was so disappointed...

We wait a while longer, the crowd starts to thin out some...and then...here come some buses...first bus goes by...I see Elliott & Ace waving at us out the back left window...very cool...then the second bus goes by...it's all the band guys...then here comes bus #3....(dramatic pause).

I start getting frantic...OK, OK...and then...I see...in the front left window...Kelli e and KATHARINE!  Oh my God!  There she is!  They smiled at everyone and the bus motored away.

So then we go into...what do we do mode?  Where are they going?  Should be see if they are going to the hotel?  Colleen says she thinks they are staying at the Hotel DeAnza...and maybe we could go there and Maddie & she could fake being maids after I take out the real ones...anyway, so we don't actually do this but have fun thinking about it...

Then we say goodbye to Colleen and get to the car...Maddie makes me drive because "I know San Jose".  OK, not a problem...we drive over to the Hotel DeAnza to see if there's anything going on...nothing...Maddie says something about the Marriott...I say that I don't know where the Marriott is...so I start to head toward the freeway home and I see a logo that looks like a Marriott Hotel.

We go over there...nothing...so we hit the highway home...in the meantime Maddie's still got Katharine06Idol on the phone...

THE RIDE HOME (THE KATHARINE ENCOUNTER)

So we're driving along, Maddie's still chatting away on the phone to Florida...I start weaving around the lanes a little because I'm just a touch tired...and I also start driving a little too fast but...whatever...so we must go about 30 miles at least heading toward Stockton from San Jose and then out of the blue....Hey, don't those buses look familiar?

We see three buses that looked a whole lot like the ones we'd seen leaving HP Pavilion about a half hour before...so we start thinking, "That couldn't be them, could it?"  LET'S FIND OUT!

Only problem is we are stuck on a stretch of road with night time construction going on...it had been whittled down to one-lane...so Maddie's on the phone frantically telling Katharine06Idol about how we think we're following the Idols buses...

OK, so the construction area breaks and I'm able to make a move...We get along side of the last bus (which we presume is still the girls' bus) and I get up to that front left window I'd seen Katharine in before...Maddie's yelling at me, "Honk the horn, honk the horn"...so I do...I can't really see what's going on in the bus because I'm driving so I'm relying on Maddie to be my eyes...

So she's yelling something and waving at the bus and then I drive past it because there's a car getting really close behind me...Maddie says..."We've got to do it again...slow down let them pass us..."

I drive past all three buses, move to the right hand side of the freeway...I let the guys' bus go by...we could see they were watching some kind of movie...I didn't see any of them though...then bus #2 goes by...then there goes the girls' bus....so we've dropped back...

I get back over to the lane to the left of the buses and speed up so we can get along side the girls' bus again.  OK, so here we go...Maddie's yelling at me again to honk the horn...

She's waving at the bus and I'm honking the horn...then Maddie says, "She's waving at me...Katharine waved at me..."  So I lean forward to try to see and all I see is Katharine dropping the shade over the window in a "Thank you for being such a fan but please, please, please leave us alone" kind of gesture...

But hey, at least she was cool enough to wave...I wasn't expecting her to stop the bus and get out and have a lengthy conversation with us or anything...so we're extremely happy and excited about all of this.

We had missed our exit to Stockton in all the excitement...so we had to turn around...I know, I know we should have followed them all the way to Portland...sorry!

Maddie gets back on the phone to Katharine06Idol...I'm not sure if I mentioned she'd actually gotten off the phone at some point there (HA!  Just kidding Maddie!)...

Maddie's telling the story about what we'd just done and goes on and on about it all...then the phone is dying so she says goodbye to Florida...(it was past 3 a.m. on the East Coast I should note...)

Then Maddie tells me that Katharine06Idol says that this was better than we she actually got to meet Katharine in Tampa earlier this month...something about blacking out and not really remembering anything that happened when she met Katharine...pretty funny.

So we make our way to Stockton feeling all goofy about our strange, chance encounter with our favorite girl Katharine...we get to where I left my car and say our goodbyes and that was that...

The entire way back to Redding I'm thinking about how I'm going to tell this story on here...I figured that I should run that disclaimer at the top JUST IN CASE, you never know when Kat may be lurking...

I told Maddie to let me do it since well...since I wanted to and she got to do the play-by-play on the phone so at least let me do what I do best and write the story about it...

And so here we are...this only took me about 90 minutes to write...no big deal...blah!  I hope that if you made it this far (THANK YOU!) and that you enjoyed my story...because it was just a crazy, crazy night.

Oh my God!  I just put this into a word processor document and it is 5 1/2 pages long.  I hope it is worth it for you guys.  It was a lot of fun writing it so...hope you all enjoyed it.

Oh and it was a pleasure meeting everyone in both Sacramento & San Jose...met KC in Sacramento too...didn't mention that...even though you all make me feel like a giant...that's OK.  Alright, that's enough...

minnie from katharinefans.com recap

Wuz up San Jose!  Well after just being at Kat Homecoming, passing out 1200 glowsticks while trying to evade the security who were just doing their job, and getting lucky in getting my camcorder in to cover Kat's awesome performance in front of her family, friends and fans, I took a different path for the San Jose concert which was  my second....I see sjwolves has seen four including this one! Well, KMF tech wizard boss, Phee said to me,  "This time just relax and enjoy it! You've already done more than enough for us, now just do it for yourself!  So, sorry no vids this time. But, oh I had a wonderful second time around!

Well, Vadia and Katidol, compared to LA, the security seemed "relaxed"  at San Jose's HP Arena; just four people at the North gate entrance who both collected tickets and checked purses. And no metal detectors!  Maybe we could have gotten our 10,000 glowsticks through here at San Jose.

Anyway, as soon as I arrived with my hubby Ed, I called Cobaby to see where we Kat fans would meet for a picture. I noticed many people crowded around the souvenir booths buying programs for $20. and pictures of the idols. I bought a program which really nice...it has nice 11X14 glossy pics and a 8 X 10 picture of Kat for my granddaughter who couldn't come this year. I had taken her to the last two Idol concerts. And I noticed there arena officials to take care of the many fans who arrived in wheel chairs, lots of families with young kids with handmade posters. Then, there was long line for those including myself who wanted to take a picture with this large cardboard poster of the idols...for free. They said we could look it up on line in two days.

Then my cell phone suddenly rang, and it was Co who said "Hey, Minnie, we're here at the Main gate with Maddie and Sjwolves." I said, "OK, I'll be there in two minutes"....Well, I saw Maddie was wearing her homecoming t-shirt as I was too and then, Co and Sj.  It was great seeing Maddie again as she was also in LA and meeting the great Cobaby who has managed all those phab projects for KMF.  As a matter of fact, Co wanted me to take pictures of the souvenir stands, contribute my tickets and this recap for Katharine's Tour Scrapbook.

After the picture taking and hi, how are yous, we all scrambled off to our seats, because it was five minutes to seven which was supposed to be the start of the show.  Well, it actually started at 7:15 pm.  We had good seats, though Ed estimated that we were at least 100 yards from the stage, not really close enough to take good pictures. The arena is smaller than Staples Center. And the officials told me they estimated a crowd of 13,600 people were expected. Part of the arena was closed off, so 14,000 would have been a full house!

I noticed the set up of the arena. Nice wide and deep stage. A large screen above the stage flanked by two screens beyond the stage like Staples.  Text messaging appeared here too on the screens. Did you text Kat here in S.J.  Well, I caught two here.

At 7:15PM, the lights dimmed and the crowd started to shout, scream. I tell you it seemed louder than in LA. I do know the acoustics here were different, not as good as at Staples Center.  Anyway, the AI logo  flashed onto the LCD screen while the live band accompanied it. I've have to say, that the  AI theme music is quite catchy and it really reved up the crowd into a frenzy!

Mandisa comes out, and the crowd erupts into an even greater frenzy when she says, "Wuz up, SAN JOSE!"  In fact anytime, someone said, "San Jose" the crowd went into overdrive. I had this feeling that there was a lot of pent up excitement at the anticipation of the idols were coming to town and the "I can't wait to see my favorite" and the making of posters and t-shirts.....

She sang beautifully as did all of the idols and she really knew how to get the crowd moving. Then Ace joined Mandisa in he r song and again the San Jose fans erupted loudly, showing their love. His performance prompted Ed,my hubby to say later, that Ace was one of the better performances of the night. And so too was Lisa.  After listening to her perform her songs while also playing the keyboards made us think this girl's really talented. Cute Paris came next and sang well; it won't be long for this youngest idol to take off with her talent.

Cute Bucky was fine, did his songs and then came alive when Kellie appeared to loud applause on stage to join him in their duet. Kellie has huge stage presence and she is going to be a star.  I have to say that just concentrating on the show without having to deal with taking vids, gave me a much better picture of how the idols were performing.  Seeing them in person, oh wow, much different from seeing them on TV.  And you'd better get yourself a ticket to see them, believe me. This is moment not to be missed, seeing them at the beginning of their road to stardom!

Intermission time. I didn't leave my seat. I just sat there and collected my thoughts after enduring an hour of almost incessant screaming and shouting of love from the San Jose fans.  The lights dimmed and again the AI theme goes up and the crowd erupts once again and LOUDER when Chris appears on stage. He is the crowd favorite. You can't even hear him speak or listen to the lyrics because the fans screaming won't stop, especially when he says, "Hey, when I come back here next year, are ya still gonna be here?"  Then, Elliott comes out and again, you thought it was his homecoming, the fans once again erupt like Mount Vesuvius. Elliott was actually born in California. He says, "I'm kinda sad because this is our last stop in California" and then he adds, "Gee Sacramento was great, but boy, San Jose..." saying this in response to the grand greeting he'd just received.
After Elliott's fine performance, the guys, Ace, Chris and Bucky joined him for the "Patience" song which was a nice pleasant change of pace from the rock and roll we had been treated to.  Of course, my heart rate was beginning to pick up. I nudged Ed to tell him Kat was next. And I kept thinking ohh, maybe I should have brought my cam to try to pick up Kat's performances, and geez, the security wasn't that tight, maybe...

Then, I heard "two, three, four.....and oH WOW, the crowd erupts into a glorious thunderous greeting for our Kat.  Her beautiful face appeared on the large LCD screen and she smiled in grateful response to what I almost thought was a better greeting than she had received in LA....is that possible.  Gorgeous Kat appeared as in LA,  dressed in a long sexy black dress with the cross straps in the back. And her hair was done in her sophisticated long and curly style to frame her beautiful face. Ed called her the most beautiful idol!

She did the BHCT in the Kat way, changing the phrasing, nuances here and there, trills here; she just has that giftv, you know, it's not planned, she knows when and where to sing the notes, the words.  She asked us, "Come on, ya know the words, join in!" Well, I think the crowd was too "ga ga" about her being there, I know I was, because this young fan in front of me kept waving her poster every once in awhile, blocking my view.   When she finished, oh, another wild and thunderous applause, yes, better than at LA!!  Then she says," Oh, thank you. I'm so lucky and I feel sad that this is my last stop in California, my hometown" and then everyone starts shouting and screaming and  inexhaustibly at the top of their lungs!!

Then Kat  says,"OK, I want you guys all to stand up, stand up...." Kat goes into "Think"  It's a lively number and the crowd loves it. She didn't go down to the front row seats this time like she had done in LA"  Anyway, I couldn't quite get all the lyrics because quite honestly, I thought the acoustics here were not good. Staples Center was excellent.  Well, I'm sure Co, Maddie and Sjwolves will give you their take on this.  After the applause died down from "Think" it turned amazingly quiet enough for me to hear  Kat say again how fortunate she was and thanked us all for our support...

"When all the world..." and the wild shrieks and screaming started again, "Kat, we love you" and poster girl in front of me waving and blocking my view.  I noticed in her beautiful rendition of SOTR that she embellished it with "trills" like the way she performed the  "Somos Novios" duet with Andrea Bocelli. I didn't remember that she sang it quite the same way in LA.  Different...and it so worked beautifully. Kat just has IT, the gift of knowing naturally when and how to sing a note!  Then, at one of the ending pauses of SOTR, the crowd loving her yells and screams for what seemed like an eternity, only to be broken by Kat continuing, "then why oh why can't I"  OMG, more screams, more applause, standing ovation, posters waving, glowsticks waving...

Taylor came last and his winning performance prompted my hubby to say, "That guy's talented and I can see why they liked him" Then, the finale, "Living in America" gave the exuburant fans in San Jose, one last chance to see the idols. Of course, I was looking at Kat and guess what my camera picked up...Kat was barefooted.  No slippers, shoes, mcboot. Cobaby, did you catch that? Kat was so cute dancing around with the idols, no evidence of diva like behavior, Kat  just being one of the idols performing for a truly up crowd. San Jose REALLLY  loved and showed it to ALL the idols.

Kat if you ever get a c hance to read this in your tour scrapbook, I just want to say, what a personal thrill you have given me to participate and be able to see you in person. We agree with David Foster, that "you are a force to be reckoned with."  And paraphrasing Kat49 from KMF, I wish to say, Katharine, you are so full of hope, full of potential and promises to provide many bouquets to grace the home that I call my heart. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

kmfan25 from katharinefans.com recap

Okay, so my concert experience didn’t go quite as planned. In my head I pictured getting to the Hp Pavilion, calling Co to meet up with everyone else, screaming as loud as I could when Kat came out, dancing, maybe even try to get Kat to wave in my direction. And of course I’d do all this while video taping Kat’s set so I could share it with everyone else. And after the concert I would wait by the busses in hopes of meeting Kat. Well, this is how it really went...

My brother and I get to the HP Pavilion and as I search frantically for my phone, I realize I left it at home. Sorry again, Co. I really wanted to meet up with you guys. So, I planned sneaking my video camera in perfectly. I wrapped it my sweater, put my disposable camera at the bottom of my bag, and put my sweater on top of that. I figured that if they felt the bag I would just tell them it was a camera. So, we get to the doors and the lady scanning the tickets, asked to look in my bag. I opened it, but of course she felt the bottom, and when she felt something hard I quickly told her it was my disposable camera. She said "okay" but lingered there a bit too long, which made me nervous. FINALLY she let go of my bag, and let us in. I think my brother saw how scared I got because after he asked "Did your heart stop?" All I could do was nod my head. I would have been so disappointed because I really wanted to have a video to share with everyone. So, we find our seats and as we are waiting I realize, even if I do record Kat’s set I wont be able to share it because I don’t a USB cable. Don’t worry I was determined to video tape it, and find SOME WAY to share it.

Okay on to Kat! I really did plan on standing up and cheering for Kat as loud as I could when she came out, but I also wanted a good video. Of course with my luck two people who worked in the box office decided to come in and watch, and they just HAD to sit two seats away from my brother. Then to my left, the blue blazers (the staff that looked out for anything that shouldn’t be going on, such as video taping) had a clear shot of me if I stood up and video taped. All I have to say is thank God the people in front of me didn’t stand up or else I wouldn't have been able to record anything. My brother sat so the people sitting by him wouldn't see me, and kept an eye on the blue blazer. So I nearly got Kat’s whole set!!! Seeing her is such a surreal experience. It really does go by way too quickly. In her speech she said how she was sad that it was their last stop in California. The way she said it was sooo cute. I tried not to scream too much because listening to a video where you can only hear screaming instead of Kat singing isn’t the most enjoyable thing in the world. However, I did manage to get in a couple "woooo"’s. I also stopped recording a little after Kat finished SOTR because I really wanted to stand up and cheer for her, so I apolgize not getting her walking off stage.

I knew she was about to come out for LIA, so I tried to get ready and I crossed my fingers that the people in front of me would stay seated. They decided to stand up, and I really wanted to see Kat so I figured, "Oh well, I have her whole set, I’ll just enjoy this one." But when my brother saw that she was wearing that tunic type dress again he was like " You have to record that!!!" He than said "Look! That guy is recording." I look over and see a man standing right in front of a blue blazer happily recording. So I waste not time jumping out my seat, and record LIA and their final bow. I loved my seats during LIA. I was on the side where Kat goes up the ramp. I could also see behind the stage so I got to see Kat go back there.

This is getting long so I’ll try to hurry. When it was over I told my brother I wanted to go to the busses but he didn’t want to, and he was the one driving so we just went home. On the way home I rewatched everything, but again felt bad that I wouldn’t be able to upload it. Anyways when I got home I was looking at my dads video equipment and found a USB cable. I was so happy when I found out he had one because after watching it again I really wanted all of you to see it.

So, about the video. I miss the "2,3,4" part, and the way I was seated I couldn’t get her face when she’s up on the platform. You can hear me say " I love the zoom on my camera!"(I hate my voice! I sound like a man...lol).  I want to apologize now for it being shakey. My hands were trembling because Katharine McPhee was 60 feet away from me(), and I didn’t want to get caught. I lose her in a couple spots, so I stop recording but only for a little. Also when Kat isn’t in frame it’s because I was trying to watch without looking at the LCD screen. I don’t have the beginning of LIA, but I have from when all the girls are on the platform to when Kat officially exits the stage. Kat looks like she is having so much fun during LIA, and it’s really fun to watch her. I especially like when she laughs after Paris drops her mic. I am still working on uploading the video, but when I do I’ll post it in the media section.

Sorry again for this being so long. I hope you enjoyed it, but I especially hope you enjoy the video because it’s my gift to all of you.

San Francisco Chronicle

REVIEW
It's safe to go out of doors now -- the Idols have left

Aidin Vaziri, Chronicle Pop Music Critic

Friday, September 1, 2006

The people who put together the "American Idols Live!" Tour did everything to keep reviewers away from the show on Wednesday at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. They refused to hold press tickets. They made photographers sign a nasty contract. If they could have, you get the feeling they would have cordoned off the entire arena with a velvet rope just to keep out anyone with a pen.

But it was hard to tell whether they were trying to protect the 10 gleaming season five finalists or the poor music journalists who had to sit through more than two grueling hours of amateur pop stars wheezing their way through some of the worst songs ever written -- FM horrors such as Styx's "Renegade," the Doobie Brothers' "Takin' It to the Streets," Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive," Bob Seger's "Hollywood Nights," and, worst of all, a grand finale with all parties involved joining in on James Brown's "Living in America." Call it a mercy diss.

The favorite fallen Idols appeared more or less in the order they were given the boot from the ratings-shattering television show, which meant the first hour of the concert was wasted on over-styled kids whose futures almost certainly lie in performing at strip-mall openings with William Hung and holding up liquor stores.

For all their plastic enthusiasm and canned thank-yous, even Simon Cowell would concede that Ace Young, Mandisa, Lisa Tucker, Paris Bennett (who didn't even bother to sing the chorus on her karaoke version of "Crazy in Love") and Bucky Covington will never play on a stage this big again, if any.

Former roller-skating waitress Kellie Pickler might, but judging by the little red bustier she wore while singing Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About," it would have to involve some kind of pole.

Meanwhile, the not-quite sold-out crowd of school kids and their parents had to sit through a long series of advertisements disguised as an intermission before seeing the four finalists in action.

Performing in front of a backdrop that looked as if it had been pieced together by a first-year Academy of Art student using aluminum foil and a Commodore 64 screensaver, it was obvious that the competition was not quite over for metalhead Chris Daughtry.

With the veins in his chrome dome bulging and eyebrows furrowed, he grunted his way through the aforementioned tunes by Bon Jovi and Styx, threatening, "If I come back here next year, will you guys be here?" But his 15 minutes were already up.

Elliott Yamin, smacking gum and still holding out on that orthodontist appointment, enforced most of the children's bedtimes with his watery renditions of James Moody's "Moody's Mood for Love" and Elvis Presley's "Trouble" before joining the other male losers for a version of Guns N' Roses' "Patience" that left out the best bit -- the whistling.

After sitting out the beginning of the 60-date tour for dubious medical reasons, runner-up Katharine McPhee pe rformed a rousing version of Aretha Franklin's "Think" and the two songs that she will take to her grave -- "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and KT Tunstall's "Black Horse & the Cherry Tree." She looked radiant in a black, backless evening gown, but her strained smile made you wonder if she wasn't just some genetically modified robot clone concocted out of DNA samples just to keep the show on the road.

Headliner and competition winner Taylor Hicks, meanwhile, looked like one of the California Raisins without a costume. He sweated and groaned and did his ridiculous drunk accountant calisthenics to songs that no one with their mental facilities in working order would actually like.

Hilariously, Hicks ran through the audience for his opening number, Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock," and strapped on a guitar that obviously wasn't plugged in for his rendition of "Hollywood Nights." He contorted his face through lifeless takes on Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City," "Takin' It to the Streets" and the dreadful original "Do I Make You Proud?"

Frankly, it would have been more fun to watch Paula Abdul perform three hours of armpit farts.

Is it too late to consider a career in goat herding?

pheenomenon from katharinefans.com review of Chronicle review

I love this review, it's hilarious. Katharine comes of very very well relatively speaking (and that is all that matters), he didn't have anything nice to say about anyone else and he was actually very complimentary to Katharine with only a couple of petty jibes thrown in, if you dissect it:

Needless and petty jibe: After sitting out the beginning of the 60-date tour for dubious medical reasons

Big Compliment: runner-up Katharine McPhee performed a rousing version of Aretha Franklin's "Think"

Big Comliment e.g. She OWNS these songs!: and the two songs that she will take to her grave -- "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and KT Tunstall's "Black Horse & the Cherry Tree."

Big Compliment: She looked radiant in a black, backless evening gown

Needless and petty jibe: but her strained smile

Big Compliment, Katharine is perfect and the best thing in this show: made you wonder if she wasn't just some genetically modified robot clone concocted out of DNA samples just to keep the show on the road.

cobabycmw from katharinefans.com recap

I know there are a lot of San Jose reviews already, but I wanted to provide a recap of the interesting and incredibly fun day I had.

Before the Show:  The Scene behind the HP Pavilion

I got off work early yesterday just to partake in the entire Idol Mania Brigade that happens when they are in town, so I get over to the HP Pavilion around 2 p.m. and as I'm crossing the street there goes the buses!  I quickly hustle over to the loading dock/behind the arena area where a group of fans are congregated.  The girls bus had already gone in and the guys bus was just pulling in the gate and Bucky had his head out the window saying, "I'll be back outside later!"  While hanging out waiting I met up with Asil (Lisa) from Katharine Fans and we were chatting and laughing about the site and the members, etc.

After a short bit Ace and Chris came out and signed autographs, took photos, etc. with the fans. Chris didn't stay too long; however, Ace did and was so kind and sweet to everyone.  I did tell him how much respect he is getting and I give him Props for being so great to the fans, and he responded with that sweet smile and said, "Aww, thank you!"  Then later Elliott and Bucky came to the gate and signed autographs, took pictures, etc.  Bucky was so sweet to this one lady in a wheelchair, he came out from behind the gate to take a picture with her and sign an autograph, etc.  It was also fun watching the guys carting around on their little motorized scooters and seeing Taylor catch a few and drop a few football passes.  He caught a pretty good one and I yelled out "Go Hicks!" and he looked up at the gate and everyone was cheering, it was pretty funny actually.  During this afternoon excursion I ended up getting Ace, Chris, Bucky and Elliott's autographs.   The girls never came out to sign autographs, it was kinda sad because the sweet lady in the wheelchair asked Ace to see if Kelly would come out because she was a huge Kellie fan, but to no avail.  So, I left around 3:40 to go home and get ready for the concert, fortunately I only live about 4 miles from the arena.

It's time for American Idols Live!

I get to the arena about 6:15 and meet up with Maddie, SJWolves, and Luvkntl and we take our quick picture. It was funny because as I'm meeting them I hear this, "Aunt Colleen!" shouted out and I see my two teenage nieces and they tell me how they got their seats upgraded by the radio station that was out in front of the arena, so they were all excited!  Then once inside met up with Minnie for another group picture with me, Maddie and SJWolves, and then finally find my friend and her daughter and get to my seats.

I'm going to just give some of my personal thoughts of the other artists because I really don't have any new info. to add as you've all read plenty of reviews.  I loved the entire concert; however, did notice that they all are pretty much in "Routine" mode at this point.  I thought Mandisa was outstanding, I just love her voice!  The crowd reaction for Lisa at the end was so loud and awesome and she just broke out into this big smile and said "Wow, Thanks!"  Apparently, she really noticed and appreciated the SJ crowd reaction.  Ace, Paris, Bucky and Kellie were all good, but I felt like I'd already been to the concert about 20x after reading all the reviews, although this was my first time seeing it live.

After intermission I was excited because I knew Kat was coming up soon, I was all set to call Laurie and Elphie per Elphie's instructions during Patience, which actually was great advice because I'm new to this 3-way cellphone calling thing!  The San Jose crowd was insane for Chris, I think he proba bly got the biggest response, Chris was good, but not one of my favorites.  I loved Elliott - he blew me away, I will definitely be buying his CD.  Then comes Patience and I call the girls for Kat's set and that went smoothly - yeah!  Kat of course was awesome and mentioned how she was sad that it was the last California show and thanked everyone for their support, and then closed with her signature song - SOTR.  The crowd loved her!  I was so happy to see her get such a great response.  Taylor as ya'll know was next and he was pretty good actually.  For the closing number of Living in America, Kat was up there having a good time and I noticed her skipping as she was going backstage . . . and then came the bows, show over!  My friend and I say goodbye as she has to get her daughter and friend home because it was a school nite, so now I transition into the funny part of the recap . . .  .

After the Concert Highlights

So the concert is over and the crowd is filing out, but I am hanging around because I'm scheming up a way to try to get backstage.  I call up Elphie and Laurie and ask them to help me write a note for Kat to have delivered backstage.  The usher lady tells me I need to leave the area I'm sitting in and I find this perfect spot to sit without being noticed, so I scale a small wall to sit in this handicap sitting area.  At this point Laurie, Elphie and I are just cracking up hysterically so I tell them, "Okay, focus, help me write this note for Kat," and then we finally get on task and starting drafting the letter.  So, the final outcome of this hysterically funny phone call is this note "Hey Kat!  Awesome Show!  This is Colleen "Co Baby" from Katharine Fans.com.  I just got off the phone with Laurie and Elphie, who you met in Nashville and they said I have to meet you TONITE to represent the Kat Pack and Katfia.   I hope to see you later! - Colleen"

After completing the letter and hanging up with Laurie & Elphie I proceed to go down where the people going backstage have congregated.  They start going back and I am just kind of trying to blend along with them even though I don't have a backstage pass.  This one security guy for the HP Pavilion was saying if you don't have your passes you have to leave, so I'm like "Okay, darn what do I do?" I then break into the work the charm mode and see this other security guy and say, "You look like a nice person can I ask you something?" and I proceed to ask him if he can get a note back to Kat.  He waves Fred over to talk to me and I tell him that I'm a big supporter and I'm representing Kat's fan website or something like that and was hoping to meet Kat and if he could bring back the note to her.

He then tells me, "I'm Fred the security guy on the Girl's bus I'm with Kat all the time.  We're on a really tight schedule and we have an 11-hour drive tonite, but I'll give her this note, I promise."  Fred was very nice about it and I could tell he was being truthful and sincere, which is how he has earned the nickname "Sincere Fred."  I then have to hang out and try to blend in with the working staff tearing down the chairs, etc., so the mean security guy doesn't

see me.  I see the nice security guy and take his picture and thank him again.  I'm patiently waiting and Fred was giving orders to his crew with the note in his hand the whole time, eventually, he disappears backstage.  I was starting to wear out my welcome hanging around and the mean security guy finally tells me I have to leave and I'm like, "But, I was waiting to hear back from Fred, but, but . . . "he wasn't going to allow me to wait any longer, so of course, I obliged his request.  At this point I leave the arena knowing I tried my best to try to meet Kat, and who knows if Fred ever gave her the note.  I then head over to the area where the buses are loading and meet up with Maddie and Joe.  The whole time while waiting with them, Maddie is on the phone with Kimby (KatharineIdol06) giving her play-by-plays of the bus situation.  The third bus finally pulls out and next to the driver is Fred, I wave at him and say "Hey Fred!" and then look in the window and see Kellie and Kat sitting at the table and poof they were rambling down the road.

Maddie, Joe and I head to our cars and I get home and join the chat room crowd.  Kimby is on the phone still with Maddie and she relays the story about them following the buses and driving up to see Kat.  Kat does her wave to Maddie and then does the "Talk to the Shade!" action - LOL.  At this point I'm pretty beat and I say my goodnites to the chat room gang.  I go to sleep just cracking up over the day's experiences, but knowing I gave it a good Katfian try!
